Dye penetrant test

Dye penetrant inspection (PT) is a widely applied, low-cost method used to locate surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics or ceramics).

Penetrant applied to a cleaned surface is drawn into surface-breaking discontinuities by capillary action. After the excess is removed, a developer draws the penetrant back out of the flaw, leaving a clear indication.

Typical applications

  • Stainless steel and aluminium welds
  • Crack detection on non-magnetic materials
  • Intermediate checks after root pass and grinding
