Magnetic particle examination

Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) is an NDT process for detecting surface and shallow subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel, cobalt and some of their alloys.

When a part is magnetised, a discontinuity at or just below the surface creates a flux leakage field. Magnetic particles applied to the surface gather at that point and make the flaw visible.

Typical applications

  • Steel structures and fillet welds
  • Heavy castings such as crusher and mill parts
  • Fatigue crack checks during maintenance shutdowns
