In ultrasonic testing, high frequency sound waves sent from a probe into the material are reflected back from internal discontinuities or the back wall. By evaluating the position and amplitude of the reflected signal, the depth, length and location of a flaw are determined; the same method is used for wall thickness measurement.
Typical applications
- Volumetric examination of butt and fillet welds
- Rotary kilns, hydromechanical equipment and crane welds
- Wall thickness measurement on pressure vessels, tanks and pipelines
- Internal flaw scanning of heavy castings and forgings
